Pity them who have broken their leg, not for the inconvenience of their condition, but for the sheer ugliness of the prosthetic devices they have to contend with. Why can’t we offer more solace in such moments of need, be exalted to latter-day-dandies instead of having to traipse around with such plastic contraptions? With this in mind Damian O’Sullivan set about redesigning medical prosthesis in the hope of arriving at a more dignified solution. The exploration lay not so much in the chosen forms, as they are largely dictated by the human body, but rather in a change of material: porcelain. A fragile yet strong material, hygienic whilst elegant, in other words all the right paradoxical sought after qualities. The result, perhaps more poetic than practical, does however reflect the inherent beauty of recovery and mirrors the healing process of our mending bones.
Shelley’s working process is one of inclusion and collaboration, always taking into consideration her audience and the users of a particular space. Each artwork is designed with site in mind, often incorporating local history or materials that reflect their surrounding. This includes creating artworks that are harmonious with the surrounding architectural materials and style. As project manager she has experience working with architects, engineers, administrators and fabricators to achieve a final artwork that is timeless, yet unique to each space.
Staschke makes sculptures based on paintings in what is traditionally considered a craft medium. The results are beautifully made objects that simultaneously expose the crude structures of their creation. Staschke believes that the act of how something was formed imbues meaning. The relation of what is fully formed to what is left unfinished expresses that meaning. It contrasts perceptions of taste, ability, and worth.
Clegg is a ceramicist inspired by her surroundings, she makes quiet, understated pieces in porcelain which echo her local landscape.
Throughout Kathleen’s career she has attended numerous confectionary classes, demonstrations and trade conventions and shows. She was fortunate to have studied extensively with world renowned Hall-of-Fame Decorator Betty Newman-May, completing a 150-hour course known as the “Lambeth Method” of cake decorating. The Lambeth Method of English overpiping became one of her favorite methods.
Cimatti's design is born from a rereading of past artistic production through a filter of formal personal sensibility directed towards the making of a functional or sculptural object. The forms generated are aesthetically accurate and display a strong sense of the real feminine character, of grace, of elegance and of attention to detail.
